Benue Court Sentences Seven Cousins To Death By Hanging…You Won’t Believe Why


In what will come across as a really startling development, seven cousins, Peter, Elias, Chibueze, Emmanuel, Simon, Patrick and Godwin all of Ebere family in Enyikpo Ulayi village in Ado Local Government Area of Benue state have been sentenced to death.

They were sentenced to death by hanging by an Otukpo High Court.

The septet were yesterday convicted by Justice Wilfred Kpochi for criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide punishable with death.

At the hearing, the court was told how the convicts conspired and agreed among themselves to killed their brother, one Vincent Ebere with Cutlasses and sticks with which they bruised and matcheted him on the head on December 25, 2012, which led to his death.

Delivery his judgement, Justice Kpochi turned down the plea of allocatus by the defendants insisting that it was of no effect hence the punishment for the heinous crime was mandatory.

He held that the prosecution had proved his case beyond all reasonable doubts and accordingly sentenced all the accused to death by hanging.

Speaking shortly after the judgement, the prosecuting Chief State Counsel, Mr. Ada Ocholi who lauded the judgement said it would serve as a deterrent to others since nobody was permitted to take the laws into his hands.

On her part, wife of the deceased Mrs. Felicia Ebere and his brother Chukwuma commended the Court for the judgement and the judiciary for the manner the case was handled.

They expressed happiness that justice had been served in the matter.

Varsity workers begin nationwide strike Feb 5

Non-teaching staff in universities will commence a nationwide strike from February 15, 2021 over the Federal Government’s handling of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System(IPPIS), sharing formula of the N40 billion earned academic allowances and non-payment of arrears of the new minimum wage. The workers, under the Joint Action Committee, which is made up of Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) had last week embarked on a three- day protest over government’s failure to honour the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed with the unions on 20th October, 2020. Gas explosion, truck, bandits kill 24 in Delta, Ondo, Kaduna PunchJan 24, 2021

At least 24 persons were killed in a gas explosion, road crash and a bandit attack in Delta, Ondo and Kaduna states respectively. Ten persons reportedly died on Friday night in Agbor, the headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State after a gas plant went up in flames, destroying several buildings, vehicles and leaving many persons with serious injuries. Eyewitnesses told Sunday PUNCH that a gas tanker had arrived at the Osadebe Gas Plant along the expressway around 6pm. One of them, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said instead of waiting for hours to allow the vehicle and the content to cool off, they started discharging it immediately. He said, “In the process, the tanker went up in flames and over seven buildings around the plant were burnt down, more than 10 people died while many were injured. “They rushed the injured victims to the Central Hospital, Agbor, but there was nothing on the ground to attend to victims.
