President Buhari has signed a new law prescribing a six-month jail term for anyone found guilty of flouting any of the COVID19 protocols. The president signed the COVID19 health protection regulations 2021 in Abuja on Wednesday, January 27. The signed law provides a legal framework for the prosecution of any defaulter. The law states that an offence under these Regulations is punishable, on summary conviction, by a fine or a term of six months imprisonment or both in accordance with Section 5 of the Quarantine Act. The law adds that security agents including Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, and other relevant Local Government, State and Federal Government agencies have been mandated to ensure the enforcement of these Regulations. Sunday Igboho Yoruba activist, Sunday Igboho has warned that those who razed down his house worth N50 million will run mad within 48 hours. Recall that his house was razed by unknown arsonists who came in two buses, fired gunshots sporadically before setting the house ablaze. This happened just five days after Igboho made good his promise that he would ensure no Fulani herders remained in Ibarapa. At least 24 persons were killed in a gas explosion, road crash and a bandit attack in Delta, Ondo and Kaduna states respectively. Ten persons reportedly died on Friday night in Agbor, the headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State after a gas plant went up in flames, destroying several buildings, vehicles and leaving many persons with serious injuries. Eyewitnesses told Sunday PUNCH that a gas tanker had arrived at the Osadebe Gas Plant along the expressway around 6pm. One of them, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said instead of waiting for hours to allow the vehicle and the content to cool off, they started discharging it immediately. He said, “In the process, the tanker went up in flames and over seven buildings around the plant were burnt down, more than 10 people died while many were injured. “They rushed the injured victims to the Central Hospital, Agbor, but there was nothing on the ground to attend to victims. Violence erupted in Igangan in the Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State on Friday when a popular Yoruba activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, reportedly stormed the Fulani settlement in the town to eject the Seriki Fulani, Salihu Abdukadir, and some other herdsmen accused of fuelling security problems in the area. Unconfirmed reports claimed that some persons were killed while properties worth several millions of naira were set ablaze during the clash which occurred in the evening. Although Igboho could not be reached as calls to his telephone line indicated that he was out of reach, residents of Igangan, however, said that at least one youth from Igboora was killed by Fulani fighters while two others sustained injuries from gunshots.
