Four residents have been reportedly shot dead in Orlu, Imo state, following a clash between officers of the Nigerian army and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) established by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

TheCable gathered that the clash was triggered after some soldiers were attacked for allegedly assaulting some youths in the town on Sunday night.

An eyewitness, who chose to remain anonymous, said the soldiers retaliated and allegedly shot one of the youths dead before leaving the area.

However, the soldiers were said to have returned later at night only to meet stiff resistance from personnel of the IPOB security outfit.

A clash between the two groups led to sporadic gunshots, as residents scampered for safety.

TheCable further gathered that more soldiers were deployed to the town on Monday, with sporadic gunshots heard in Orlu town and other parts of Orlu local government area (LGA).

Four persons, including a middle-aged woman, were said to have been killed by stray bullets while some properties were burnt.

Videos circulating online, which were verified by TheCable, showed soldiers firing gunshots in major streets as military operation continued in the affected town as of Monday evening.

At least four Hilux vans conveying heavily armed soldiers were seen patrolling the roads, while two vehicles filled with ESN personnel were sighted in another part of the town.

TheCable could not immediately reach spokespersons of the Nigeria police force and the army to comment on the incident.

Non-teaching staff in universities will commence a nationwide strike from February 15, 2021 over the Federal Government’s handling of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System(IPPIS), sharing formula of the N40 billion earned academic allowances and non-payment of arrears of the new minimum wage. At least 24 persons were killed in a gas explosion, road crash and a bandit attack in Delta, Ondo and Kaduna states respectively. Ten persons reportedly died on Friday night in Agbor, the headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State after a gas plant went up in flames, destroying several buildings, vehicles and leaving many persons with serious injuries. Eyewitnesses told Sunday PUNCH that a gas tanker had arrived at the Osadebe Gas Plant along the expressway around 6pm. One of them, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said instead of waiting for hours to allow the vehicle and the content to cool off, they started discharging it immediately. He said, “In the process, the tanker went up in flames and over seven buildings around the plant were burnt down, more than 10 people died while many were injured. “They rushed the injured victims to the Central Hospital, Agbor, but there was nothing on the ground to attend to victims.
